5. Sudden-Onset or Difficult-to-Control Diabetes
The pancreas plays a critical role in regulating blood sugar, and its disruption by a tumor can lead to sudden metabolic changes. Research indicates that a new diagnosis of diabetes in adults age 50 or older, particularly those with a healthy weight and no family history of the disease, can be an early warning sign. This occurs because the tumor physically interferes with the organ’s ability to produce or secrete insulin properly. For individuals who are already diabetic, a sudden and otherwise unexplained difficulty in controlling previously stable blood sugar levels—often referred to as brittle diabetes—may indicate that a malignancy is interfering with pancreatic function.
