9. Bloating and Ascites
Advanced or progressing pancreatic cancer can lead to significant changes in the abdominal cavity, most notably ascites. Ascites is the accumulation of protein-rich fluid within the abdomen, which occurs when cancer cells spread to the lining of the belly or interfere with lymphatic drainage. This causes the abdomen to become visibly distended, firm, and swollen, often creating a sensation of intense pressure or “tightness”. While bloating is a common symptom of many minor digestive issues, persistent and worsening abdominal swelling paired with other red flags should be evaluated by a physician immediately.
