9. Skin Changes and New Moles
Skin is our largest organ, and its changes are visible. While most skin cancers are not internal, their signs are external, making self-examination easy.
- The ABCDEs of Moles: Monitor existing or new moles using the ABCDE rule:
- Asymmetry
- Border (irregular or jagged)
- Color (multiple colors or very dark)
- Diameter (larger than a pencil eraser)
- Evolving (changing in size, shape, or color)
- Other Skin Signs: Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) is a major sign of liver or pancreatic cancer. Any sores that do not heal after several weeks, or red, scaly patches, should also be evaluated.
